![]() I am able to dump information into a folder quickly and move on. I am able to set up the folders exactly how I want (and could rearrange very easily if I wanted to). I know that's a personal preference, but these are the reasons I decided against it.ĭevonThink Pro meets all of my wants. Also, I don't want to see things like "Library" and "Recent Items" in the folder pane. Labeling and the other manual organization in Yojimbo isn't for me. Personally, this application didn't fit me well. It definitely feels like a "consumer" app. It has the nicest eye-candy of the group and things like the F8 input box made capturing very easy. Yojimbo is a very nice app, reminiscent of StickyBrain. I would use this if my sole need was a tool geared for the writing process - capturing ideas, outlining, minor research, and draft writing. Scrivener seemed like a nice writing app, but it didn't stack up to Yojimbo or DTP in terms of managing information. Personally, I wanted a tool for GTD, a place for reference materials, a note-taker/outliner, and something flexible enough to change with me as I refine my processes. I just finished evaluating Yojimbo, DevonThink Pro, and Scrivener. As it seems, Apple includes a mechanism to automatically sort new documents into existing piles. (and better eMail handling)Įdit: look at the Piles thread. Sherlock was replaced by SpotLight, and I wish for a similar replacement for DTP. ![]() At the current state, DTP is in analogy like the old 'Sherlock' where you had to manually index your harddisk. But it is much better integrated into the OS than DTP. Spotlight has many problems, of course, and it isn't actually a competing product. spotlight ease of use here is the role model. Why do I need to 'import' files, or 'link' to them explicitely? They are already on my harddisk. Think about it, it is cumbersome to have a separate DB. I would really appreciate if DTP would be 'spotlight-with-AI-and-good-GUI'. Why is there a need to have a 'database' in DTP? This DB (and the index files) is the core of DTP, but it isn't actually needed or useful. Completedly nuts! (note: meanwhile, DevonThink has released another product, DT PaperlessOffice, that should treat eMails better, but I was so frustrated by my first experience, and I don't want to spend $$$ to upgrade to DTPO if I am not happy with DTP) Instead, metadata was treated like text and preceded the rtf'ed body text. eMails were imported without attachments, and the eMail metadata was not used and put into appropriate columns. The first thing I tried is using the provided scripts to import mails so that DTP would be my mail archiver. DTP wants to be all-inclusive-solution-for-everything. There is one conceptual point I have a lot of troubles with: I get the impression that DTP 'fights' the OS, the Finder, SpotLight, and Preview/Safari/Mail. Clearly, such programs have a steep and long learning curve. While I realized that many users just LOVE DTP, I did not yet get it. ![]() I haven't used Yojimbo, and bought DevonThinkPro just recently.
